Poppinghole Farm - Texel Sheep

Poppinghole Texels were established in 2003 with in-lamb shearling ewes purchased from a highly respected Texel breeder in Norfolk.

Since then we have steadily built up the flock on our lowland farm at Robertsbridge in East Sussex and to date have more than 60 pedigree Texel breeding ewes.

They now include pedigree stock from as far apart as Castlecairn, Loosebeare, Stonefieldhill and Cwmcerrig flocks.

The sheep that we have bred from these ewes and rams have been awarded numerous prizes at shows including Edenbridge and Oxted, Heathfield, the South of England and the Kent County Shows.

All of our pedigree stock is performance recorded. We use the latest technologies and, of course our well trained eye, when selecting breeding stock.

This ensures that the terminal sires we produce not only look good but have the paper work to prove their progeny will grow faster, have less fat and a greater degree of muscularity!

We also show them at the fat stock shows later on in the year where our butchers’ lambs and carcases regularly appear in the top three and therefore fetch good prices.

We compete at the winter fat stock shows because this is where the heart of the industry lies (producing crossbred slaughter lambs) and we believe in showing off what our rams can do in terms of improving carcase quality.  Around 90% of our slaughter lambs grade at E and U for conformation, so that means they are in the top price band, but they don’t cost us any more to produce.
